THE REVIEW: YSL LE CUSHION ENCRE DE PEAU FUSHION INK FOUNDATION SPF 23

Cushion foundations, cushion blushes, and even eyeliner are ultra-popular in South Korea and have been for a few years now. The Western world is finally catching up on the trend and I am the happier for it! Cushion foundation compacts contain a porous sponge soaked in a foundation. I have talked about my obsession with cushion compacts  here. Please have a read. Anyway, a cushion compact foundation is designed to create a smooth, uniform canvas that minimises shine, gives you that dewy finish we normally see in catwalks during fashion weeks, make your skin look and feel fresh, and give it a natural-looking finish combined with moisturising and protective benefits. Though I have seen some people use brushes to apply the foundation, the compacts generally come with antibacterial sponges that are actually wonderful for application and touch ups.

Last February, Yves Saint Laurent launched their new cushion foundation, Le Cushion Encre de Peau in Singapore ( also other parts of Asia like South Korea, Hong-Kong etc. I believe), and will follow with launches in other markets globally. Luckily, I have a friend who lives there and she’s travelling to Europe this March, and guess what? She’s dropping by London ;D.  2016 seems like the year when all the brands are coming up with their own version of cushion foundation, while some of them are taking things to a new level and start releasing cushion blushes already. First it was Lancome, then L'Oreal, then MAC Cosmetics, there’s also Givenchy, Biotherm, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Dior and it looks like Yves Saint Laurent is joining the team to bring us their famous Fusion Ink Foundation in a highly portable cushion compact, the Le Cushion Encre de Peau.

THE REVIEW: YSL LE CUSHION ENCRE DE PEAU FUSHION INK FOUNDATION SPF 23

I know some of us have different takes on cushion foundations in general. I do still love my foundations housed in beautiful bottles and tubes, I’m a makeup-artist after all. They do give us that beautiful, dewy and fresh look if you love a lot of sheen but there are also some of us that tend to go for the matte look and set them in powder (for lasting power anyway) and still they don’t tend to last as some regular foundations especially in hot and humid weather. Thankfully there are a lot of cushion foundation finishes to choose from nowadays.

So I was really super excited when YSL launched their own cushion compact, they’re very first BB cushion which promised a semi-matte finish and all-day flawless coverage. So people with slightly oilier skin/combo, rejoice!

PACKAGING

I mean WOW. Really stunning! The eye-catching glossy lacquered black and gold that matches YSL's glamorous aesthetic, and has little bit of weight so it doesn't feel flimsy and cheap. I love the gold YSL emblem embedded into the case, very luxe. The compact case of Le Cushion Encre de Peau Cushion Foundation opens to reveal a sponge soaked with liquid foundation. The formula is based on the good old Fusion Foundation, which was introduced back in 2014, as the most scientifically advanced make-up in the world. The special lipophilic active material, found in its formula was originally developed by NASA for trapping fine particles in outer space. It absorbs four times its weight in sebum to keep skin matte and ensure a comfortable 24-hour wear.

The tray that functions as a sponge puff holder as well as an airlock to prevent the cushion from drying out. A separate antibacterial sponge pad applicator (black and beige colour), which is also included, is ideal for blending and achieving a perfect, natural finish, and long-lasting weightless coverage. The puff is soft, easy to work with and picks up enough product for one application. Thanks to its liquid formula, the foundation incorporates a broad spectrum SPF 23 / PA ++, without leaving any white cast on the skin. Unfortunately it doesn’t come with a refill like most Korean cushion compacts. Le Cushion Encre de Peau retails at SG$88 ( about £45 more or less) for the case and a single sponge, and subsequent refills can be purchased at SG$58 (about £30 more or less).

SCENT

Smells amazing. I quite love the scent, it doesn’t have that strong herbal smell some cushions tend to have.

SHADE, TEXTURE AND FINISH

It’s  available in 6 neutral colours ( B10 to 60), which is amazing compared to most other cushions, but still seem to cater only up to around NC 40 or so when my friend swatched the darkest shade there. I almost went for the darkest shade LOL coz you know asian cushion foundations are like, they can be too light! Thankfully my friend found the perfect shade for me. I’m an NC 30-NC35 from MAC so went for the shade 50 in the end.  Hopefully they will add more shades soon and this is the only case for Asia. The formula has a cooling sensation when applied on the face and the sponge applicator will help you create a flawless and matte finish. It is ultra lightweight but yet gives a decent medium-ish level of coverage. Again, the product was originally packaged in the form of a tube with a special applicator but unfortunately because of the texture is very liquid so it's a little difficult to apply at any time. Perhaps it is this that inspired Yves Saint Laurent Beauté to make it more practical. Some of the ingredients also help control the sebum, which makes it more effective for women with oily and combination skin types to get rid of that greasy luster. Its luminous matte finish was elegant and sophisticated — definitely love at first use. So easy to use: use antibacterial sponge pad applicator. Apply by pressing the puff into the moistened sponge and pat the puff onto the face. Usually use 2 layers to give me that perfect, maximum coverage but surprisingly the 1st layer was quite good enough for light discolourations. In terms of finish, it’s definitely not as shiny and tacky as other cushions. It wasn’t a full on matte finish which I expected with western brands, but I really love the amount of moist dewiness to it, think MAC Face and Body but medium coverage. So good! It’s demi-matte but I find that the more I pat on the more dewy it gets which I quite love. After an hour, I got a perfect dewier finish which I prefer but if you don’t want the dewy finish and expected a shine free wear, you might be disappointed. You can always tone the dewiness but putting a light layer of powder.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

I’m really impressed with this cushion. I’ve been using it for 6 days now and loving it! It doesn’t stay matte after several hours but it last pretty well for me! Mind you, lasting power or how long it stays looking quite fresh and even toned is more important for me than staying matte. I’m really not a fan of a patchy , cakey makeup. Maybe about 8 hours, then it’s time to touch up. Despite being so lightweight and feels like “real” skin, it manages to give me a medium coverage. The formula contains acrylate copolymers (the stuff found in setting sprays, sealing liquids and some long wear foundations) - which explains its ability to adhere to the skin and remain flexible without looking or being powdery. Like I said, it’s hydrating to the skin and gives a really good balance of dewiness and matte finish. It stayed even and fresh, no streaking, congealing or caking around my pores. With the cold weather in the UK, this is so perfect. I would definitely wear a separate sunblock though, duh, very important ladies. Also a huge deal for me is the packaging. I’m just a sucker for gorgeous, sleek packaging. So is this worth getting? Hell yes! I admit, it was slightly pricey with no refill and makes YSL Le Cushion Encre de Peau one of the higher priced cushions. Hence I would recommend this you lot who have combination and dry skin who are looking for a light to medium-coverage cushions. Really great for touch-ups and who are on the go. Also great for those looking for a head turner makeup accessory and a big luxe cushion fan. It’s definitely not “just another cushion”.

WHERE TO BUY THIS

If you love Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation then you’d love this, practically the same/ improved formula foundation just on a compact. It’s not available in the Western market yet, but if you have any friends from Singapore, South Korea or Hong-Kong who can buy them for you then great!;D

XOXO
