What do famous Korean celebrities Song Hye-Kyo, Go Hyun-jun and Taeyeon have in common besides fame? Coveted skin and looks that's scored them sponsorship deals with the biggest Korean beauty brands.

Korean women have long been lauded for their flawless and youthful-looking skin, which is why women around the world are flocking to beauty counters and stores to stock up on K-beauty essentials in hopes of unlocking the secret to amazing skin! Like I said, Skincare technology in Korea (and Asia in general) is about 12 years ahead of the US or UK. Whether they’re born beautiful, or whether it is their beauty regime, we all cherish and idolise the radiant, acne-free, and flawless skin that Korean women possess. Their clear, smooth, and even-toned complexions are nothing short of perfection. But what is the secret of their beautiful skin and can we get a flawless skin like them too?

Here are just a few K-Beauty tips & practices you definitely need to know...

You are what you eat and this is especially true when it comes to your skin! You can't respect your skin but trash your body and still expect to look radiant! Skin care is more than skin deep...Eating too much fried foods will result in breakouts while skimping on fruits and vegetables will make your skin look dry and dull. Your diet makes a big difference in how you feel and look and adding a little seaweed to it can improve your overall health. Drinking lots of water will help to maintain your skin’s healthy glow and moisture. Koreans also believe in eating their water by adding more fruits and vegetables into their diet. As obvious as this may sound, many of us are still guilty of drinking less than 8 glasses of water a day, and not eating enough fruits and vegetables. This could well be the reason why your skin is lacklustre! Gradually change your diet. I assure you, a difference will be seen and felt .

Eat more seaweed based products.  Not only seaweed is popular with the Japanese but also to Koreans. Actually, to us Asians in general! SEAWEED is a great anti-aging food and contains a wealth of vitamins and minerals hard to find in other foods. Because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties, seaweed reduces redness caused by rosacea as well as swelling. The iodine regulates the metabolism and helps rejuvenate the skin. One sheet of nori contains the same amount of Omega 3’s as two avocados! Omega 3’s are the good fatty acids that help keep the skin retain moisture, consequently reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Filled with Vitamin C, it also strengthens nails and hair.

Everything you put into your body affects your skin. If you want natural, clean, illuminating skin, then you must eat and drink clean! Nutrients in fruits and vegetables will help clear up your skin when imperfections arrive. The Korean diet is known for an abundance of water, vegetables, and other ingredients filled with minerals and nutrients that are sure to leave your skin gleaming.

KIMCHI, my fave, is a fermented cabbage that Koreans eat with almost EVERY meal. This vegetable is loaded with probiotics, vitamin C and beta-carotene, ingredients that boost skin health.

Another common ingredient present in their diet is Makgeolli, a fermented rice wine that is abundant in minerals and amino acids. It helps to brighten the skin and preserve its elasticity.

Let me quote Sandara here to make my point more convincing: ‘My beauty secret to achieving that rosy and fair complexion is to get a good night’s sleep.’ Again, this is something that everyone knows, but how many of us are actually getting sufficient sleep every day? Try sleeping early and getting at least 8 hours of sleep for a week. Not only will you look less like a panda, your skin will also be clearer and brighter!

So we talked about how important sleep is and not looking  like a scary Panda the next day. Sometimes we forget how important the skin around our eyes are, it’s very delicate so always treat with your ring finger as it’s the weakest. PAT GENTLY... Koreans believe in keeping the delicate eye area super moisturised by tapping on an eye cream around the eyes before sleeping.  This prevents dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness. Use under eye strips to ease darkness and puffiness and strong anti-aging eye creams.

So important to cleanse your skin daily and exfoliate 2- 3x week! Im sure everyone had heard of the infamous 10-step Korean skincare regime. Well girl if you haven’t , you better make time for this if you want the same ethereal and flawless complexion. The routine involves prepping, cleansing, exfoliating, toning, treating with an essence, topping up the treatment with a skin boosting ampoule, applying a mask, tapping on eye cream, emulsifying, moisturising and loads of protecting in the daytime (SPF SPF SPF) and finally slathering on a night cream or sleeping mask. Let's face it, this takes serious commitment but the good news is your effort will be duly rewarded. Skin care is also something that’s taken seriously from childhood – so tell all your daughters, sisters, nieces – in fact, any teenage girl you come across (they’ll always think fondly of the crazy lady who once told them to put ‘essence’ on their face). CONSISTENCY is the key to any beauty regime, and the Koreans swear by it. Taking care of your skin is very crucial, no matter how busy you are. If you want beautiful, flawless, and firm skin, then you cannot be lazy. Set up a beauty regime and follow it religiously.

The most powerful ingredients on earth come straight from nature. If you wouldn't put chemicals and preservatives in your body, then why would you put them on your face? Look for beauty products with natural ingredients. A few favourites of mine and from Korean beauty experts include Snail Mucin, green tea, and Yeast Ferment.

Snail Mucin, also known as Snail Slime Extract (yes, from real slime) is becoming more popular in the beauty hemisphere. Koreans use snail creams with this ingredient for people with sensitive skin. It is known to help regenerate skin cells, bringing back a healthy looking complexion. I've been loving anything that has snails on it for few years now! I'm obsessed! Would you put snail slime on your face for the sake of your skin cells? Um, hell to the yeah!

Green Tea helps revitalise tired skin and maintain a healthy, natural glow. Being one of the most popular ingredients in Asian beauty products today, it can be found it a wide variety of products from moisturisers to essences and everything in between.

Yeast Ferment is a naturally fortified Vitamin B group. Products with this ingredient, including essences, help increase your metabolism and maintain healthy skin. This ingredient became popular in recent years for its anti-aging benefits. It is also great for cleansing and moisturising the skin. Unfortunately, it does have a yeast-like smell, but when the benefits are so good you soon won't notice it! And there's so much more but that's another post! haha!

So guilty here! lol. Can't help it! Im a 90s baby haha! Put away your tweezers and give your brows a break. Thick, STRAIGHT BROWS are all the rage especially in Asia as they are the fastest way to shave years off your age. While not everyone can carry off this look, visit a professional to find a thick-brow style that's in proportion to your face. #onfleek

Repeat after me: pores are perfectly normal. If you don't have pores, you're not human. So step away from the blur tool and filter apps, they are not to be abused. Still not convinced? Check out some K-beauty ad campaigns, the models and celebs have visible pores because that's real life — our skin needs to breathe.

Anti-aging Beauty tips

Korean women own the #Iwokeuplikethis look because they know how to pamper their skin. While an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a mask or two a week will certainly keep the dermatologist away.
K-beauty masks — whether in sheet, bio-cellulose or gel form — don't need to be washed off after application and will deliver much. Sheet masks have been quickly become one of my favourite ways to pamper myself. I just love them especially when it comes to getting that dewy glow, I find sheet masks to be the most effective! They are beauty superstars indeed.I’ve been putting sheet masks microfibre and hydrogel) every night, ( that was one of my skin resolutions from last year) and it made such a huge difference on my skin! Sleeping masks is a MUST for me too!

YO, so important! Like I said this is the most important step in your AM routine! Whether it's winter or summer, you're staying indoors or hitting the beach, be sure to apply sun protection before you put on your makeup. Or even when you’re  using the computer! UV rays and environmental aggressors are unkind to our skin and these damages are difficult to reverse. So if you want your skin to "glow from within", ditch the tan and start doing right by your skin. BUT I REALLY, REALLY NEED A TAN! I’M SO DEADLY WHITE! I’ve been there and done that my friend, I feel yah. Like especially if you’re on a vacation, In the Bahamas or any tropical location, a nice glowy tan is the most envy-inducing souvenir you can bring back right?! But I’m sorry to say this to you darling, you do know what tan really means right? Visible sun damage. Also say NO TO TANNING BEDS! Those should have stayed back in the 80’s where they belong. They damage your skin and can cause cancer!

Commonly known as a BB or CC cushion, cushion compacts are giving traditional liquid foundation a run for its money. Not only does a cushion compact do the job of creating a flawless base, it also usually brings additional skincare benefits such as sun protection and hydration. These multi-taskers are also travel-friendly, won't create a mess, and can give you your desired finish, whether you want to go dewy or matte.

Now I’m a makeup artist. Make-up Artistry is my LIFE. I just LOVE make-up! It brings out the best in you and you are able to express yourself through it! It’s amazing what make-up could do really, it can change or enhance your features! But I also believe in the number one beauty rule: To have a good make-up, you need to have a good base which is why Skincare is so important to me as a makeup artist.  Having heavy make-up every single day isn’t always so good isn’t it? I’m sure many of you would have noticed that Koreans always have this effortless – also known as nude – makeup look or the “No makeup makeup look”.  To achieve that look, Korean women just usually use their cushion compacts to achieve that dewy look and loads of facial mists! Apply thin eyeliner, a thin layer of mascara and use an eyebrow pencil to create neat and tidy brows, finish it with a lip tint! Most importantly, keep your skin clear and supple with the above tips, so you won’t have to pile on thick layers of foundation and concealer.

Anti- aging Beauty Tips

DEHYDRATION is enemy you guys! You know what’s so famous in Korean dramas? Besides the fact that no matter where you go or what you do, your first love will find you. (Especially if you met as children and were then tragically separated. Then there’s really no escape.) —Humidifiers! I see BUTTLOADS of these bad boys!  In Korea, whether you’re in an office, at home or even when you’re travelling on a plane, everyone has Humidifiers! Because of the very dry Korean winters, humidifiers are needed to protect furniture (wood especially) as well as to help reduce skin dryness and illness. Heatings could be very drying to the skin you know. Keep waking up with dry skin and stuffy sinuses especially during the winter? Try a humidifier. Adding moisture to your room can make a big difference in how you look and feel, especially if you have dry nasal and sinus passages, and are uncomfortable during the arid winter months. I’m so eyeing the Dyson Humidifier one! Quite pricey but worth the money—their Dyson Hygienic mists has an “ultraviolet technology” that kills 99.9% of bacteria in the water before the machine is set to work! Oo must have to not only to up your skincare game but also good especially if you’ve got babies and kiddies at home.

And lastly Hydrating Facial Mists— I love them! Facial mists are extremely popular to keep skin moisturised throughout the day! Try to keep your skin hydrated and refreshed by using hydrating mists that also help combat wrinkles!

Your skin is precious! High maintenance? So what? We’ve only got one skin and it’s never too late to start taking good care of it.These simple tips and practices are easy ways to make a big impact on the condition of your skin! Start incorporating these small changes and you’re sure to see the results of your hard work and consistency in your appearance!
