HOW TO PERFECT YOUR SMOKEY EYE FOR AUTUMN

URBAN DECAY NAKED SMOKY PALETTE

The smoky eye is a versatile make-up look for any woman’s beauty repertoire, but it’s not always easy to create yourself. My advice, for any look, is to really practice before you go to bed. Do it differently on each eye, and see what you like better. Keep playing with it until you get a look you like... Why is it so popular?  It is so synonymous with a sexy, alluring make-up up look. Whether you have got hazel brown eyes, or crystal blue eyes, framing all the way round with a dark dusty hue makes the pupil really pop and helps the eye stand out. I think generally, women feel more confident with the smokey look. Can you wear it by day? I think you can; often it just needs to be slightly pared down. During the day time, I love pairing a smokey eye with a nude lip and adding a darker shadow on the socket, more black eye liner, more mascara and a bold lip when I go out after work.

I love to use a long wearing cream shadow  called “cement” ( a grey-beige color) from Bobbi brown or MAC “Painterly” Pro Longer paint pot (nude beige) as a base with black eyeliner and a smudge of dark eyeshadow for a pretty delicate day smoky eye. Again, just add more eyeshadow to create a deeper look for evening.

THE INSPIRATION

THE TUTORIAL

So this is more of an evening glam look to me. It’s a sexy smokey eye with a berry red lip as you can see on my face chart, so we need to keep the base really fresh and simple. Prepping the skin is so important as I love a gorgeous, glowing skin during the winter - so moisturise, moisturise .

I would apply the moisturizer around the ‘high bones’—I tend to gravitate towards La Mer. Then lip balm, also La Mer, and a primer along the T-zone.  It's best not to apply a huge amount of moisturizer before makeup, but a touch in strategic places helps the foundation slide and adds a glow to the skin. I like to be generous with moisturiser after makeup [is removed].

Then I then apply the first shade of foundation through the center of the face, starting with a lighter shade that matches the neck. Next is the second shade of foundation along the cheeks and forehead, blending into the first shade. My fave as of the moment is the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Next is a spot concealer where needed, then the under eye concealer --loving the new Mini Miracle Wand from Charlotte Tilbury . After that some soft contouring, highlighting for the glow and don't forget to finish with a peachy blush. Get cheeky with a pop of colour that brightens your face and defines your features. I love a good cream blush, it just gives your skin a healthy, fresh vibrancy that looks and feels natural.

Now we do the eyes...

PRIME LIDS

Prep lids with a layer of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Anti- Aging or concealer. The  anti-ageing Eyeshadow Primer Potion not only locks shadow in place to give you vibrant, crease-free colour that lasts all day; it also measurably improves the signs of ageing over time. They added high-tech ingredients that: fight wrinkles, improve tone and texture, create a subtle, soft-focus effect, instantly wake up tired eyes and minimise the appearance of redness, creepiness and other imperfections.

APPLY A MATTE BASE
Use a fluffy eye shadow brush (like the one that comes in the Naked Smoky palette) to spread “Combust” from lash line to brow bone. The looser brush picks up less pigment, creating a sheer matte foundation for the smoky look.

HIGHLIGHT INNER CORNERS
Press the gunmetal glitter shade, “Armor”, on the inner corners of the eye with the tapered, flat eye shadow brush and blend it with the lovely matte brown shade “Whiskey”. Add the lovely shade "High" near the tear ducts as well for highlight.

MARK THE OUTER CORNER
Press “Armor” on the outer corner of the eyes, too. Hold the brush flat to the lid at an angle to place shadow precisely from crease to lash line. Also follow up a darker matte brown shade, “Whiskey” on the socket as well .This should leave a blank space in the center of the lids.

EXAGGERATE THE LOWER LASHES
Blend “Armor” and “Whiskey” down to the lower lash line. Use just the tip of the brush to press product under the lower lash line. In this case it's a bad idea to use a sweeping motion because that will cause fallout later on.

BLEND, BLEND!
Blend “Black Market” into the outer corners and lower lash line using a fluffy shadow brush. Instead of using a windshield-wiper motion to soften shadow, sweep the brush in a circular pattern. The typical side-to-side move can leave harsh lines on the lids, but circles give a softer effect and get that smokey finish.

ADD EYELINER
Also apply Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner at the lash line with the Ultra Fine Liner Brush for precision. Then add a black eyeliner pencil to the sightline and waterline, too.

SMUDGE
Use the smudger brush in the Naked Smoky palette to diffuse the black liner. To get even better blending, dip your brush in powder before you smudge.

ADD MASCARA
As a final touch, add loads and loads of mascara!I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Glossy Black Full Fat lashes for volume, length and drama.

THE FINISHED LOOK
For even more vamp, add a bold lip. Warm up with liner, layer on lipstick, or ignite the creamy, matte lip pencil. I’m loving this crimson NARS Hardwired Lipstick called “Deadly Catch”.
